Mery Butler, Guidance Counselor
West Area Adult School employs a full-time certified guidance counselor who evaluates the current academic standing of incoming students, and determines which West Area Adult School program is appropriate to meet their academic needs. Included in this evaluation are:
- The student's high school academic history
- Current TABE scores
- FCAT scores
- The student's academic testing history
- The student's personal needs and goals
Students will then be enrolled in the appropriate program and given their schedule of classes.

Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT)
The FCAT has replaced the High School Competency Test (HSCT) as a graduation requirement. The FCAT is a test of reading and mathematics, and is usually given in October and February.
- The FCAT was developed to see how well a student has mastered selected benchmarks from the Sunshine State Standards, which spell out what every student graduating with a high school diploma in the State of Florida must know. These standards apply to all students including adult secondary education students pursuing a high school diploma.

Career Lab
West
Area Adult School's career lab assists students in exploring post-secondary job training or education.
Students are invited to attend informational meetings featuring career focus speakers representing area colleges, military training, and vocational and technical schools.
Computers in the lab give students access to information on-line and aid job seeking. Each Adult Basic Education student is encouraged to complete "CHOICES", an interest and aptitude survey on-line program designed to aid the student in exploring a career field.
